The 2026 PWA regulation introduces a structural adjustment to the balance between Slalom X (fin) and Foil racing.
In previous seasons the framework was simple:
Slalom X (fin) was limited to stronger wind conditions, with 2 boards.
Foil could be used across the full wind range, with no defined upper limit.
For 2026, the structure changes.
Slalom X
3 boards per year (max 85 cm), 2 per event
4 sails per year
Minimum wind limit between 12–16 knots depending on the venue
The key change is the formal inclusion of the 85 cm board within a wider operational range. Slalom X is no longer restricted to strong wind conditions. It now covers medium wind scenarios that were previously outside its practical scope.
This makes training and development on large fin boards in 12–14 knots fully relevant within the competitive framework.
Foil
In foil-only events, there is still no defined maximum wind limit. The discipline remains autonomous.
Combined event FIN + FOIL
In combined events, racing switches from Foil to Fin between 15–17 knots. This creates a clear transition threshold where fin becomes the active platform.
The 2026 system therefore operates across three formats:
Foil-only events
Fin-only events
Combined events with a defined switch point
Bullet’s Perspective
The expanded operational role of the 85 cm board aligns with a direction we have consistently considered technically relevant.
The board matters. The regulation matters.
But performance ultimately depends on the rider.
For this reason, our focus remains on supporting our athletes through structured rider benefits that allow them to prepare properly across the full Slalom X wind range defined for 2026.
